Mormons
Some would say that people are repulsed by the “weirdness” of Mormon beliefs, but how many Americans have ever even heard any of these beliefs? No, the one thing that everyone knows about Mormons–and it’s the only thing that matters–is that they’re serious. They actually believe “that stuff”. When they say “God bless you”, they’re actually asking an omnipotent Being to do something, and that freaks people out. “These guys are nuts! We’ve gotta keep them far from power,” thinks “moderate” America.
Catholics used to be a despised group, because Catholics, you know, actually believed “that stuff”. Then came Vatican II, when they gave society at large that wink and nudge that means “we’re not serious”. Now, instead of anti-Catholicism, in America we have anti-clericalism, because the public still can’t shake the suspicion that the Catholic clergy, at least, are serious. Would that it were true!

sounds a interesting book
ReplyDeleteI suppose people are just making sure that they don't elect someone who can't keep a clear division between their beliefs and the good of the people.
ReplyDeleteMormon beliefs are pretty f'ing weird, but that's true for most religions so I don't see why they're any weirder than the rest.
ReplyDeleteI think any religion, when they're 'in your face' are just asking to be scrutinized or made fun of by the masses. Mormons are still in this phase.
ReplyDeleteThey got LOTS of shit a few generations back for outlawing blacks to be mormon. (Skin pigment = sin, and so forth) but they changed. More recently, they were busted for trying to baptize people post-mortem. They were digging up graves to help save souls.
Are they doing the right thing? In their minds, yes. But they have to realize that 'free will' is an essential part of life, and they CAN NOT impose their beliefs on others.
It took Catholicism hundreds of years to realize that. They regress now and then. Good luck, mormons.
I'm not a fan of Mormonism, but they're good people, very friendly.
ReplyDeletegreat post
ReplyDeleteI don't mind people being overly religious, they can believe what they want. It bothers me though when they keep trying to talk me into that sort of stuff, and freak out at me when I tell them I'm not religious.
ReplyDeletelooks interesting, I like religious books, going to search for it
ReplyDeleteI think all religions are weird. That goes for Catholicism, Judaism, Mormonism, etc.
ReplyDeleteI am repulsed by all religious beliefs followed by anyone
ReplyDeleteI can't think of Mormons without thinking of that movie Orgazmo now....
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with religious beliefs as long as they don't skew your view of the reality you can actually see and prove.
ReplyDeleteI went to Utah once cause i have a lot of family there and I felt like an evil human.
