Got a New Rescued Dog

Has anyone here ever had a rescued dog before? yesterday, my sister got a terrier from friends of hers, and while not necessarily a rescued dog, he's a bit underfed and has been picked on by other dogs. when we introduced him to out rottweiler today, she actually was nice to him, surprisingly enough, and we're introducing him to my malibu tomorrow. my question is, how long does it take for a rescue dog to learn to trust someone? while my sis has made friends with him fast, he gets the shakes whenever i start coming towards him, and will even back up while i'm petting him. do i just let the trust grow over time, or look up a dog book online about "making a dog learn to love" or something like that? i think it might have something to do with my build, as i'm 6'2.

  2. Careful. Terriers are natural hunters. This dog is going to have a lot of energy, and be super playful. Better be ready to keep up.

  3. I really have no idea when it comes to dogs so I can't really help you out with it. But I wish your sister the best with her newfound buddy =]

  4. I don't know a lot about dogs, but my suggestion is to take it slow and let the dog come to you. Just show it you're not a threat, maybe give it a treat once in a while or something. I hope the dog can recover from whatever trauma it faced.

  5. Trust will grow over time. More than likely he was abused by a male, if he is scared to come towards you, and not to your sisters.

  6. Make sure he sees you're the one feeding him and give him lot's of love. He'll come around. I've heard getting on their eye-level can help.

  7. you'll need some time to do this I think, just be patient, the dog will like you

  8. Yeah, follow the teaching of the Dog Whisperer, let the dog come to you, give him some food and eventually he'll be your friend too.

  11. I doubt your height is a problem, it's a terrier :p what's the difference between 5'5'' and 6'2'' to a very small dog? haha. wish I could help more

  12. I don't know much a lot about training dogs, but from what I've seen and read you should make yourself as non-threatening as possible (by coming down to their level or lower and not making eye contact) and let them come to you.

  14. tuff question, a rescue dog could take a while. I have a dog i adopted from the pound and idk what happened to him, but he's definitely been through something terrible, ive been nice to him for 2 years and hes still scared of everything/everybody.

  15. its probably a past experience thing. we have a tiny dachshund that used to be beat a lot by the man of the house. for a long time he wouldn't come near any of the males in our house. just took some time and he eventually came around. good luck

  17. Hmm no idea, never got one of those before, usually people just give them to us while they're puppies.
